Matcha has gone from a niche cafe order to one of the most-requested drinks at events across Southern California. That vivid green latte isn't just a trend — it's a genuine crowd-pleaser that photographs beautifully and gives guests a real alternative to coffee and alcohol.
If you're thinking about a matcha bar for a wedding, corporate event, or brand activation, this guide covers everything: what a matcha bar actually is, what goes on the menu, why matcha quality matters, what it costs, and how to book. It's based on the matcha bars we serve throughout SoCal at 58 Hester.
A matcha bar is a mobile drink station where a trained barista whisks and serves matcha to order — hot or iced — right in front of your guests. Instead of a pre-made carafe of green tea, each drink is prepared fresh: ceremonial-grade matcha sifted, whisked with a little hot water, then poured over milk and ice. It's the same made-to-order experience as an espresso bar, just built around matcha.
At its best, a matcha bar is part refreshment and part live experience. The bright green color, the whisking, and the layered iced lattes all make it something guests gather around, watch, and photograph.
Matcha fills a few roles at once, which is exactly why it's booked for such a wide range of events:
Your menu can be as classic or as creative as you like. Popular options:
So every guest is covered, we can round out the bar with chai lattes, hojicha (roasted green tea), or pair the matcha station with our boba tea cart or an espresso bar for a coffee-and-matcha combo.
Not all matcha is equal, and it's the single biggest factor in how your drinks taste. Culinary-grade matcha is coarser and more bitter — fine for baking, but harsh in a latte. Ceremonial-grade matcha is made from the youngest tea leaves, stone-ground to a fine powder, with a smooth, naturally sweet, vibrant-green profile. We use ceremonial-grade matcha for every drink, which is why our lattes are bright green rather than dull, and smooth rather than grassy. If you're comparing matcha caterers, always ask what grade they serve.
A matcha bar is a fresh alternative (or addition) to a coffee cart at weddings — especially for garden, coastal, and spring celebrations where the color fits the palette. Pair it with our wedding coffee catering for a combined coffee-and-matcha station during cocktail hour or dessert.
Matcha's calmer caffeine makes it a favorite for conferences, office perks, and all-day activations where you want guests alert but not overcaffeinated. See our corporate coffee catering options.
The color and the made-to-order theater make matcha ideal for pop-ups and product launches — and every cup can carry your logo. More on that below and on our custom branding page.
Bridal showers, baby showers, and birthdays love a strawberry-matcha moment. It's a treat that feels special without an open bar.
At 58 Hester, full-service matcha catering starts at $550. That covers a trained barista, all equipment, ceremonial-grade matcha, a full drink menu, milks and flavors, cups, and complete setup and cleanup.
From there, your total depends on guest count, service hours, and custom touches like branded cups or a signature drink. We break the full picture down on our pricing page and in our LA & OC catering cost guide — the same pricing framework applies to matcha. The fastest way to get an exact number for your date is a quick custom quote, usually turned around the same day.
A single cart with one barista comfortably serves most events up to around 150 guests within a service window. For larger guest counts — or when you want short lines during a tight window — we add a second barista or cart. Tell us your guest count when you request a quote and we'll recommend the right setup.
The details are what make a matcha bar feel custom. We can add your logo, monogram, or event design to the cups; build a styled menu sign that matches your colors; create a signature drink named for your event or brand; and style the cart to fit your venue. For brand activations, custom-printed cups turn every guest photo into a piece of shareable marketing. Branded cups need a few weeks' lead time, so plan ahead.
Our carts are self-contained and easy on you and your venue. We need about a 5x5 ft area per cart, one standard outlet (we can bring a generator for garden, beach, or estate venues without easy access), and a clear path to roll the cart in. We're fully insured and provide certificates of insurance (COIs) — most SoCal venues require this, and we handle it routinely.
For peak season (spring through fall) and popular dates, we recommend booking 4–8 weeks out or more — and earlier if you want custom branded cups. That said, reach out anytime and we'll check availability for your date.
We bring our mobile matcha bar to events throughout Southern California — Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Riverside County, and the Coachella Valley. From coastal weddings and garden estates to offices, ballrooms, and desert brand activations, we've likely served an event near yours. See our Matcha Cart Catering services →
A typical serving of matcha has roughly half to two-thirds the caffeine of a cup of drip coffee, paired with L-theanine, which many people find gives a smoother, more sustained energy without the crash.
Yes. We use ceremonial-grade matcha for every drink, which gives that vibrant green color and a smooth, naturally sweet taste — not the bitter, dull green of culinary-grade powder.
